Assessing Energy Costs For Colorado Schools

  • Want to estimate how much money achieving your cost/energy reduction goals will provide?
  • Want to identify your most cost-/energy-efficient schools?
  • Want to identify your schools with the most potential for savings?
  • Need help setting energy cost or energy use reduction goals for your school?
  • The tool below can help! It can be used to answer these questions for Colorado schools. The tool will allow you to estimate cost savings for achieving your goal. Your goal may be energy cost or energy use reduction, or simply an increased performance rating among peers (see options under GOALS).

The tool rates your school based on its annual expenditures for energy. Efficient schools that pay a minimal amount annually for their energy use score high. Inefficient schools having annual energy expenditures higher than normal (those with the greatest potential for substantial energy cost reductions) score low. The tool normalizes for differences in energy costs across schools. Thus, the fact that your school may pay more for each electric kWh or natural gas therm than a neighboring school is normalized out of the rating. The tool will help you spot those exceptional schools and those that can most benefit from energy-related improvements.

To use the tool, you will need:
  • Gross floor area of your school(s).
  • Annual electricity use (kWh) and cost ($).
  • Annual natural gas or LPG use in therms or CCF, and annual total cost ($).
